Today I attended the funeral of a dear friends mother. The celebration of the life of Linda Millwees mother, Mildred Kolar Klesel, was held in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg, Texas. Sweet Debra Adamski Hartman drove the 3+ hour round trip, with the wonderful Sue Ipser Sierra riding shotgun. I was back seat ballast. The Mass was heartfelt and beautiful. A bishop and two priests led the Prayers of the People and celebrated the Eucharist. Charlie Millwee gave a lovely eulogy, his love for his wifes family spilling forth like balm with every word. At the end, the Great Bells of St. Roses pealed out a triumphant pean of Christian victory over death. The cemetery was divided into unique family plots. Clouds massed in the distance as we said goodbye to a woman who had lived an extraordinary life. A graduate of the University of Texas with a degree in accounting- one of only three women to do so in 1944-, a business owner and entrepreneur along with her husband, she worked in the family business nearly every day while raising three children. Trail rides, great food, church on Sundays, friends, family...all the trappings of small town life...and Mildred smiled throughout her life, kept her mind sharp, and never complained. She was defined by a shining faith and strong spirit. I quote in part from one of her letters: I would like you to remember that God loves you. No matter what we are facing God wants to comfort us. We dont have to endure our challenges on our own. We have access to the grace and comfort, the power and wisdom of God Himself. While we wait for that time of acceptance, nothing can prevent Jesus from coming into our hearts right now and comforting us with His love. I dont know about you, but I needed to be reminded of this. Thank you, Mrs. Klesel, for this last gift. May God bless and comfort your family with the sure and certain knowledge that Jesuss Love is Eternal, and that we shall all be reunited at the last. Love and Peace to you all.
