Today, I finally had the chance to get out on a trail again for a little while...in the Rainbow Bottom along the Wabash River that Gene Stratton-Porter loved so well, and not far from where I was raised and where we would hunt hickory nuts. One thing that gripped me as I doubled back on the trail was the sight of my own footsteps. It hit me how each track was such a gift from God, especially as I get older. My dad used to say that in the morning, he prayed that God would help him take every step he needed that day, and at night, he would thank God for doing so. This week, I was talking with someone in terms of how God works in steps in our lives and wisely guides us a step at a time. I love the words of the Psalmist, the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and He delights in His way. Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholds him with His hand. Psalm 37: 23,24. Today, as I looked at my steps and thanked God for each one, an old, old song from my childhood came to me and choked me up a little bit as its words and tune returned to my mind, Each step I take, the Savior goes before me, and with His loving hand, He leads the way; and with each breath, I whisper, I adore thee, oh what joy to walk with Him each day. CHORUS: Each step I take, I know that He will guide me, and with His hand he ever leads the way, and then some day, the last step will be taken. Each step I take just leads me closer home. And now I know what my dad felt, and attempting to walk in his steps, I pray that my steps will lead those behind me closer to Christ each day.
