Today I finally started my new hobby: hiking. I’ve been waiting to do this since my time in Iraq (2010). I hiked approximately 9.6 miles of the ‘Mines of Spain’ south of gorgeous Dubuque, Iowa; overlooking the old Mississippi river at around 794 feet above sea level in some parts. It met and exceeded my expectations for a first hike. I had no idea just how breathtaking the geography of the area is. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect; cool with a gentle mist. The life of the forest was everywhere; owls, bald eagles, deer, rabbits and the occasional human. The new hiking shoes (Merrells) Misty gave me back at Christmas 2012 worked great. It was a great experience for my body and soul. I intend to hike it again, as there is much more to see and hike. If you like hiking, I highly recommend the area. Well worth the trip.
