Today, I got a surprise visit from the supervisor of K-12 Advanced Programs. She just happened to arrive at the moment we were about to transition into Reading. Later that afternoon, I was quite surprised and pleased when I was CCd on the following message sent from her to my building principal: I encourage you to take another pass through Dans room this week to see how far the students have gotten with their interpretation of some incredibly complex poetry theyve been reading. Students were seamlessly incorporating the language of ELA--literary devices--into their analysis of the cyclical nature of the subjects explored in the poems they were reading. The conversation that emerged during their inquiry-based discussion was mind-blowing! This W&M has provided the gifted readers with a boost that will truly give them an edge not only on PARCC but also when participating in the challenging coursework at the secondary level. Way to work the W&M teaching models, Dan! You have taken the plunge and its paying off in terms of student output that, I know, makes you proud.
