Today I had the privilege of going to an amazing place, The Wetlands & Wildlife Care Center located at 21900 Pacific Coast Highway here in Huntington Beach. There is so much to share about this special place! Today I was there to meet three extraordinary people from our community who were the recent starting point for a great development that will help further protect our beautiful sea birds! On December 12th, Liz Anderson finally caught a Sea Gull who had suffered a life threatening injury from a fishing line & hook. The bird had been seen on and off for about three weeks prior. Liz had connected with Jamie Pavlat on HBCF. This connection and Lizs tenacity and caring brought the gull to the WWCC and Wildlife Tech Shelia Eberly. I need to disclose now that in spite of best possible care and people; the bird needed to be euthanized. Before you stop reading! The gull did not pass in vain. City Councilwoman Barbara Delgleize (also awesome but not there today) heard about the gull. Also, on HBCF, I believe. And she stepped forward. That brings our total up to four outstanding women and HB residents! Meetings were had, forces were joined and really cool women got proactive! There is now a process started to supply, Fishing Line Recycling Receptacles!! The hope is that their availability will raise awareness and options to safely dispose of fishing line and hooks. Therefore reducing the negative impact of them on wildlife. I must strongly state; No one is against fishing or fishermen/women in any way! Just looking for workable solutions for all to coexist as safely as possible. Love this story! Its impressive what happens when community members, city council members and trained wildlife care experts connect and work together to enact positive change! Thank you all so much.
