Today I have a rant which has been going on for over ten years now, need to get it off my chest. I bought my home, a log cabin on 3 acres in 2004, paid it off all in cash. Closing was performed and completely messed up by Attorney Dan LaCasse of Calais, Maine. The seller signed the deed and Dan LaCasse mailed it to the wrong address so it became lost in the mail. The seller refused to turn over another deed to the property after that. I went to LaCasses office which he said he would get the matter taken care of, asked for my receipts to show that I paid for the property in full which I turned over to him, which he still has. Through those ten years I have heard a lot of promises from him but nothing was done to remedy the situation. To further complicate the matter, in 2009 the same woman I purchased the property from took advantage of Mr. LaCasse losing the deed and sold the same property to someone else and doubled her money on it. The seller, (which I bought the property from), and the new buyer had a closing done by a different attorney. In 2010 Mr. LaCasse finally gave me a closing statement which was simply typed out and not the original document. I also asked for a copy of the check that was given to the seller at the closing and Mr. LaCasse stated that he couldnt find his copy of it and would contact his bank and get me a copy of it ... he never did furnish me with a copy in the ten years. At one point Mr. LaCasse emailed me and said that he would give me a copy of the deed and to bring it to Machias and record it however only original deeds can be recorded, NOT copies. To this day, ten years later, Dan LaCasse has done nothing to assist with straightening out the matter and today he emailed me and asked me not to email him any more, he will not assist me and that Im on my own. Today I emailed him and ask him to return my original receipts to show that I paid for the property in full and for a copy of the check that was given to the seller at the closing. Lets see if he gives me back my paperwork or not. Will keep everyone posted. My advice to anyone using Calais attorneys is to watch their backs carefully.
