Today, I hit up the Iraqi/Kurdish restaurant on Nolensville Road. While the food is far from gourmet, it is home cooked and delicious. For about $10, you get soup, salad, rice, two entrees and bread + a drink. Afterwards, I grabbed a few items from the market. Middle Eastern, Indian and Asian markets in Nashville are the best places to purchase whole spices, nuts, rice and fresh produce - sorry Publix (I still love you). I actually stopped at 3 Middle Eastern markets (side by side). I ran into the same Middle Eastern guy at each market. Karl pointed out to me and Jodi that we needed to pay attention to what he purchased at each. I got my favorite purchase at the last store - Newroz Market, a Kurdish market & bakery. Check out the bread. It was still piping hot in the bag. I bought two versions - one has what appears to be Mozzarella cheese, the other was covered in a mix of spices. The lady in the bakery said - put tomato and onion on it, fold it in half and eat it like a sandwich. The two large tomatoes totaled $0.95 (or about $3 at Publix or Kroger)... Persian cucumbers $0.99/lb. If the bread tastes half as good as it looks and smells, I could be in some trouble. p.s. Nashville is known as Little Kurdistan. We have the largest community of Kurds in the US.
