Today I introduced a Private Member’s Motion to Parliament which includes measures for greater protection of marine species within Great Barrier Reef Marine Park ‘green zones’, and to prohibit the transport of turtle and dugong meat away from areas where it is legally caught for traditional purposes under Native Title, to prevent commercial distribution. The motion DOES NOT seek to ban traditional hunting or impact on the vast majority of traditional hunters, it seeks to stop the actions of a few who, in my view, are not acting in the spirit of the Native Title.
