Today I launched my cupcake parties, and as I taught the kids how - TopicsExpress

Today I launched my cupcake parties, and as I taught the kids how to decorate the cupcakes, I was reminded of a lot of lessons from my teaching days. I briefly taught junior high and high school science a few years ago. My approach in teaching has always been controlled chaos- this means I would allow the kids to express their charismatic personalities during class time while teaching them the class lessons using the Socratic method. Instead of focusing on grades, we focused on understanding the answers (and by understanding the answers you inevitably got better grades). I never liked limiting anyones minds and unless you were mathematically incorrect, I never liked to coin anything as Wrong. after all, you could be thinking something no one else has thought of before, and why limit you? So I adopted that same mentality into my cake art. While hosting the cupcake party, I showed the girls the sketch of the final product, but told them this is only an INSPIRATION. I encouraged them to create whatever they wanted. There was no wrong way and if they made a mistake, I taught them to just go with the flow and use the mistake to their decorating advantage. The end result was FANTASTIC and I couldnt be more proud! I guess what Im trying to say is that No is very restricting. Save it for the important stuff like life and death. A childs mind is like a sponge and their creativity shines like a diamond until their teenage years. Encourage it to blossom. Teach them there is no wrong in art or in imagination! :)
