Today I learned something interesting by watching Eddie Izzards Mongrel Nation on YouTube. You know how UKIP are so keen to defend The Pound and want to keep this currency as a symbol of our Britishness? Well, they dont know their history, because the Pound isnt British at all. When the Romans invaded, British people were still bartering; they had no currency or coinage of their own. The Romans brought with them, the Libra Ponda, from where we get the word Pound. The pound sign, £, comes from the way the Romans wrote the letter L of Libra. This is the same £ sign that is part of the UKIP logo. The Libra Ponda was used all over Europe as Roman rule spread, making it Europes first Single European Currency, 2000 years before the Euro. So the Pound that UKIP are so desperate to defend as a symbol of Britishness, is a foreign single European currency. I dont care whether we have the Euro or the Pound, but I think its just hilarious that UKIP are so bloody ignorant of this!
