Today I passed by probably the most disturbing church sign I have ever seen. This particular church often has signs that make me shake my head. But this one actually incited anger and disgust in me. Contribute or Die The first thought in my head was contributing your time and effort - being a productive church member, sowing and planting seeds. Then I was reminded that it probably means tithing (a tenth of your earnings). Either way, I find this highly legalistic and taken totally out of biblical context. And, as a parent of a child who we have been reminded again and again will never be a contributor to society (which is totally untrue as she contributes love to our household and hearts daily), I just find the ambiguous phrase very offensive. Looking at scripture I cling to, God wants me to contribute my time and talents as a growing step in my faith. If I truly LOVE The Lord, Ill want to give my time and effort, and yes, even my money! I will do so willingly, out of love and devotion and willingness to follow the Lords Word. I also read in the Bible that God doesnt want my money unless I want to give it willingly. So a Church commanding me to do it may fill the plate, but doesnt fill heaven or the pews... Or develop grateful hearts. He doesnt want a begrudging heart. And in the end, whether we contribute or not, dont we all die?!? 😱 Even in obtaining a Christ-like demeanor, we are told to die to ourself! So what is this threat if death they are referring to? Oh, wake up, Church who sleeps!! How will we reach this generation with threats and commands when even your words offend those who know the Word!?
