Today I rather enjoyed reading a couple of books on Peter - Martin - TopicsExpress

Today I rather enjoyed reading a couple of books on Peter - Martin Hegel;s The Underestimated Apostle and Markus Bockmuehls Peter in Scripture and Memory. I had never before realised that Peter is mentioned more times than Paul in the New Testament; it has been interesting to consider the emphasis Matthew places on Peter and noticing the differences from one gospel to another. Im doing this exercise for the sake of a Lenten study where we are trying to imagine ourselves into situations and characters in the passion narrative; I have also been preaching on these things - next cab of the rank will be Judas and what it is like to be betrayed by a friend. Matthew alone has Jesus call Judas friend .... and, of course, just before he takes his own life, Judas declares Jesus to be innocent. I am placing these Lenten exercises alongside a reading of Thomas a Kempis writing from the 15th century on the passion narrative according to the evangelists - so a little bit of critical study, imagination and mysticism. It is very humbling: I am seeing a lot of new things,
