Today, I received not one or two but five copies of the petition for a double dissolution. And the following musings from another person in letter form. Are all these people on track? Or just thinking whistfully? -------- My Senator Brandis really wants to outdo himself ! If ever anyone wanted clear evidence that the good senator and his confederates in Abbots’ (increasingly) juvenile cabinet were unready for Government Sen B gives it in spades ! The Liberal Party has never been a majority party in Australia (rarely gets more than 35% of the primary vote) and has always relied upon the support of their country cousins – Nationals or Country Party to form Government. Being a curious blend of authoritarian right wing legal types (virtually proto-fascist at times) and small ‘L ‘ ‘lemonade stand’ business types, keen to carry favour with the more moderate aspirations of the bulk of the electorate, the “Liberal” Party banner has been carried on and off by a rather motley crew since 1944. Its current chief banner holder (Abbott) is a contrarian ex-seminarian of DLP persuasion. An odd fit at the head of the ‘Liberals’ if ever there was one. Collins St and Toorak would not be amused at his boorish demeanour and blokey antics – though they go down well with Murdockian Journalists. The emergence of a decidedly ‘brown shirt’ faction within the Party, as represented by Brandis/ Abbott et al, is a cause for concern for all observers of Australian politics. Just how long the Electorate at large is willing to wear the soft fascism of the contemporary ‘Liberal Party “ - remains to be seen. My money is on a change in leadership before the next general election.
