Today I received some fantastic news... the school dorm I have raised the funds for to have built in a remote little Karen village in Northern Thailand is now under construction!!! This little foundation I am Australian Ambassador for is just amazing.. Daughters Rising... Alexa & the team.. Its all good & well for me here to raise the funds but if it wasnt for their tireless work & passion for helping these beautiful people & devoting their lives to helping.. this dorm would not be happening. It is a joy to work with such honest people & to be able to tell my customers who have made donations with 100% honesty that every cent is put straight into helping these children receive an education xx For those of you who have purchased a hand loomed scarf from me over the past 7 months... well these photos are for you!!! AND THIS IS A HUGE THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Morwakhi School educates Karen children and does not receive any government funding. It serves 85 families 520+ people. There are only 2 teachers due to financial strain. The people are proactive about protecting Karen culture and indigenous land rights. The teachers at the school bring in elders to teach children things like traditional wisdom (medicinal plants) and natural (organic) farming techniques. This school is a wonderful role model to other villages near by. Also its one of the only schools that is not controlled and funded by foreign missionary or the Thai government. Its really very special. They have been in desperate need of school supplies and a dorm building for the children to sleep in. (There are no other schools near by so children have to travel from far away) Currently the children from neighboring villages all sleep in one classroom on the floor. They need a building and beds. Myself & the team at Daughters Rising really like this project because it respects indigenous culture and wisdom. Soon they will have a dorm to sleep in comfortably! As you know 100% of the profits from the scarves has been all for funding this project...Its been a wondeful initiative as not only have the funds been raised but at the same time I have also been able to employ beautiful young Karen woman to loom these scarves, giving them freedom, dignity & hope for a brighter future... By financially empowering mothers in areas at risk of trafficking we are also helping to prevent their young daughters from needing to bring in income, therefore helping them to stay in school longer & lessening their risk of being sold into slavery. Now that rice harvesting season is over the local people are all hands on deck! I am heading over there in 5 weeks time & I think the dorm will be almost finished! We are also taking lots of stationary & medical supplies along with us & will be staying in the village for a couple of days. My 13 year old daughter & my sister are also coming along with me on this trip... what an eye opener for my little Ruby.. I hope a life changing experience. Rather than begin a new project in another village once this dorm is complete... I think it is very practical an idea, as well as positively beneficial to the villages to continue to support this village and the Morwaki school long-term to ensure sustainability. Therefore every scarf sold from here on in will go towards school supplies & hopefully if I sell a lot in the future... we will have the opportunity financially to employ another teacher xx Please contact me if you would like to purchase a scarf!! xx If you would like to make a donation to the school initiative please private message me or go to Daughters Rising website xx
