Today I received the ALS ice bucket challenge and Ill find time to complete it over the next few days - its a fine cause. But right now there is an American city where all pretenses of local government legitimacy and control have given way to protest, violence, and an increasingly authoritarian police response. Perhaps more so than any other, the bedrock principle of the social contract is the consent of the governed. It is what gives legitimacy to authority, but it cannot be claimed through force. At this point, brute force is all the local authorities have left in #Ferguson, Missouri. All of this is to say that without legitimate local authority acting as the arbiter of peace, higher authority must step in. Its well past time for federal authorities to intervene. So tomorrow morning, please take just one minute to call your congressional representative and tell them to support federal intervention in Ferguson.
