Public school Lincoln: Was a horse man; Enlisted 8 Oct 1914 served with the British expeditionary force in France and Flanders from1916 and was killed in action at Bailleul 17 April 1918 buried near there he was awarded the military medal (London Gazette 28 jan 1918) for bravery in the field and the Belgian Croix de Guerre (London Gazette)15 April 1918 for distinguished service. unm Roger James Cholmeley MC DOB 1872 Married and lived at 52 Dora Rd, Wimbledon SW19 DOD 16/o8/1919 Drowned. Captain in the Cheshire Regt. Received the Military Cross for being a member of an intelligence for 5 weeks bringing back information before attack in unknown area. Appears to have served in France through the war may have gone to Mesopotamia and was detached to the British Russian relief force in 1919 NORTH RUSSIA 1919 Late in 1919 Britain sent troops to Murmansk and Archangel in northern Russia. They were part of an international force designed to protect Allied interests there during the Russian Civil War, and to offer assistance to those Russian forces fighting the Bolsheviks in that conflict. Tom Elvin 1897 Thomas is on the memorial of those Swaby lads who fought and were spared to return to Swaby He had land in Swaby and an abode at Ketsby. he married Maggie and died in 1972 they had a son Hubert. Enlisted Sept 1914. In 1901 the family was living in Sculcoates, Hull and is down as being fromWaithe Lincolnshire Remembered at the Thiepval Memorial. Tom T Kitchen. Thomas William Stephenson. Thomas was a private in the Lincolnshire regiment 5th Battn, No. 241277. DOB 1890. DOD 26 July 1917 In France and Flanders Father; Sam 1852 Agricultural Labourer. Mother; Elizabeth 1852 from Huntington. Sibling Herbert 1885. Herbert was also in the war and was spared to return. Ada single in 1901 24 Grandson Owen 4 from Notts also. George H Westerby. 10th Battn, Lincolnshire regt. DOB 1886 DOD died aged 30 on 5th August 1916 Husband of Charlotte Ellen Westerby Father; George Westerby of Donnington on Bain. Mother; Rachel. Brother Joseph John 1892 also died at the Somme 1917 remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. These Men lost their lives in the First World War. They remembered on the memorial plaque in the centre of the village.
