Today I said goodbye to my friend, brother, confidant, mentor, and professor. Carlos Von son Carlos del Sol has battled hard his entire life even after he was paralyzed from the waste down over 30 years ago. I would not have a Masters Degree and been able to get into graduate school if it were not for this amazing man. While in college I debated other universities…at times I had success and at times I was beaten. Ethical arguments based on philosophical theory is what we used. We argued many medical based cases and I became pretty well versed in the immoral decisions that human beings were capable of making. Respecting a persons autonomy is paramount and by respecting Dr. Carlos Von sons decisions on what he wants - if he were ever incapacitated - is something I must respect. To adhere to his wishes has created a turmoil within me and I cannot seem to find comfort in this process. I never thought I would be applying philosophical theory in such a heartbreaking way. But if it be the creators will that Carlos passes on…then let it be. Thank you my brother…all the times you pushed me to excellence with my studies. I can only try to be half the man that you have been. I promise you that we will meet again my friend…on the other side…if that be the way it is going to be. I guess only time will tell. You have decided your fate Amigo…in my book, Thats Big. And, at least you are going to go out of this life on your own terms…with dignity and respect. Your one of the best people I have ever met and I am glad you took me in and helped me. I will continue your work with students…that is my promise to you. We will succeed my friend we will. Part of me feels uncomfortable writing this and sharing it publicly, but I want people to know that we are going to lose an extraordinary human being. I will remember all the times I spent with you and cherish them as long as I live. I salute you brother. And….I Love You…Adios:-)
