Today I set my alarm even earlier than usual to make it to Dunkin before Art, because today was his 86th birthday! Well, actually we all thought it was his 87th, but as he sat down and we got talking he calmly told us that he wanted to let us in on a little secret....he is really 86!! He has been lying about his age??? Why he has lied and said he is a year older is beyond me! haha If anything, dont most people do the opposite? Art, is not most people though, so anything he does shouldnt surprise me! Now, back to arriving to Dunkin before he did, so I could get his gift and share his card with some of the Dunkin crew to have them sign it as well. My plan worked and I was able to get some of his favorite Dunkin peeps to sign it, although one of the Dunkin guys, whos birthday happens to be today too, was leery about signing it or being involved in my birthday surprise. He knows Art too well and knows he does not like anyone doing anything for him or giving him anything. In fact, a few weeks ago he text me and asked me not to talk about his upcoming birthday anymore, because he didnt want anyone to remember. Like I was going to listen to him! The best surprise came when his great niece, Morgan, from Oklahoma, who is now living in England for a couple of years, and I conspired for her to send a video via Facebook while we were at Dunkin. I sent her a message to remind her and sure enough her video came through and I stopped everyone from their conversations to play it for Art. I told him I had a surprise for him. He started to tear up. Then of course I started to tear up. I then had one of the guys tape a recording of all of us for Morgan in return. She loved it. So, I think I was able to help make his birthday a success along with the rest of the crew. We had some great laughs and as we were walking out, an ambulance was backing into a parking spot, so I couldnt resist saying to Art, Youre ride is here! Now, if you know Art, that is his kind of humor. If I didnt say it, he would have, so I beat him to it! Later in the day I received a text from Art telling me how special I made his birthday and how thoughtful I was. He really has no idea how special I think he is, but I am glad I was able to make him feel special today! He deserves it!
