Today I signed a contract to go back to work. This has been the must unusual job ... ummm ... hunt(?) Ive ever experienced in the Silicon Valley. I deliberately decided to stay out of the market for a few months ... only talking to prospects sporadically. I quoted higher rates than Ive made in in the past to those who did approach me ... got some resistance and simply held steadfast on my new rates. For the last two or three months three different firms were all vying for my attention, but none of them was able to put ink on paper until last Friday ... and the other two then tried to scramble to make counter offers ... even though theyve all had months to pull their respective acts together. As usual all have been pushing to offer me permanent (direct hire) ... while Ive been pushing back to start on contact. In the past Ive pushed for contract-to-hire and then acceded to direct hire offers; this time I held fast on that, too. So, anyway, I start next month. Oddly its a company I worked at before, a long time ago and under a different OS. (Yes, I used to do Windows ... but this will be all Linux: primarily OpenStack, some Hadoop, and probably some Docker as well). Thats another 5% up the income ladder for me. Well see how it goes.
