Today I spoke at a modern bookless-library at a High School. Yes, bookless. At a high school. Just a large sea of computers awaits those students, inside a cold grey walled room. Stuffed in the corner was a small bookcase all of 3 feet high and wide, with a small collection of tattered books lining only 2 of its 5 shelves...wtf was one of the titles I noted...along with 3 or 4 of the Twilight series...(so we know how long theyve been there and how long since anythings been added to the shelf). The kids had never heard of Rainbow Rowell (Eleanor & Park) nor Ransom Riggs work. Sad isnt it? the Librarian said. Its the new wave. Where do the kids get introduced to books? I said. They dont, she replied. Unless they google them. I shudder to think of the next generation...at least these kids are still looking for new reads on the net. #undertheomgthisisfrighteningfile
