Today I took part in a fierce gladiatorial contest between two Maltese bus-drivers. At a bus-stop outside Valetta! the pair sized one another up! going bumper to bumper, rear to front end. And then a mighty tussle began... Our passenger door flapped open again and again, as if the vehicle was a cockerel ruffling the feathers around his neck, a peacock displaying its plumage. From the other bus window, a hand popped out, displaying gestures of great and vicious intensity, accompanied by a war-cry of obscene and caustic language. My poor nerves were so frayed by this encounter that I was persuaded to take a taxi home. Alas, that was no better. Not a rule was observed. Not a signal or quarter given. Instead, the entire journey reminded me of Gerry Raffertys song Stuck in the middle with you... Clowns were to the left of me, pedestrians to the right as we travelled down the road towards home.
