Today, I voted against House Resolution 644, a politically motivated resolution which condemned President Obama’s decision to exchange five prisoners from Guantanamo for the release of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier held by the Taliban since 2009. This resolution hypocritically criticizes the President’s actions, while at the same time approving of Sgt. Bergdahl’s return. President Obama certainly could have made a stronger effort to keep Congress informed of his intention to release the detainees. On the other hand, he faced a tough choice, and ultimately elected to prioritize securing the safe return of an American soldier. As the wife of a veteran, I believe the President’s actions were in keeping with our nation’s promise to our courageous men and women in uniform to never leave a comrade behind.
