Today I voted in support of the National Defense Authorization Act - TopicsExpress

Today I voted in support of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2015 which passed the House 325 to 98, marking the 53rd year in a row the House has passed a defense authorization bill. This bill provides funds for the common defense of our country, supports and protects our warfighters and their families, and assures that America’s Armed Forces maintain the vital global presence that allows them to face current threats and prepare for new ones. I was frustrated, however, that an amendment I offered to simply reaffirm that Americans arrested by law enforcement both abroad and here at home may not be turned over to the military for indefinite detention was not allowed to be debated or get a vote on the House floor. I will continue pushing my colleagues to have this important debate so that security is not achieved at the expense of our civil liberties.
