Today I was asked by a homeless person via text messages if I could help to verify another persons identity for Centrelink purposes. Both people are post 2001 Kiwis who are homeless but Ive never met them personally. I was happy to assist anyway I could but asked would I be required to know the person personally for a minimum of 12 mths? Following that I received some very derogatory text messages questioning my motives and loyalty and was basically berated for asking. I really didnt mean to offend them but have learned I need to protect myself at all times as being open has caused a lot of personal loss and heartache. Although I was a little peeved at the messages I have also learned that the people weve met through incredible hardship and who are desperate and dejected are generally suffering severe bouts of anxiety, isolation, depression and in many cases mental illness. As human beings we are all designed to cope with a certain measure of stress and fear no matter how strong we are. However, if this is then magnified by bureaucracy and unrealistic policies then it is almost inevitable the results will be diabolical. Just because we are Kiwis does not mean we are not facing a human rights problem. In fact, the word problem is a complete understatement. This is a human rights issue and its far greater than what its given credit for with all the downplaying and blame pointed in the wrong direction. This issue is so heavily entrenched in lethal immigration policies and dirty politics and is cleverly disguised under the umbrella of a reciprocal agreements and bonds. My heart really goes out to our people who are made to suffer in this inhumane way where they are afforded no dignity therefore inability to become empowered. All hope is stripped and both of our governments sit back and proclaim its not their problem. One day when Im dead and gone this desperate person could be one of my children or mokopuna. Who will help them? What will their future hold if they end up in such a place? Life has no guarantees and sitting back doing nothing yet seeing the bigger picture is not an option. Xmas for our Kiwis in need of not just financial care but love and support under such a cold and callous regime just sucks and we hate what these laws are doing with a passion. :( Nga mihi Erina
