Today, I was doing some posts and a story popped back at me from my ancient history: I was assigning ball games and got everything covered except one softball field with 4 games scheduled and I could cover it, but I didnt have another umpire for 2 man coverage. I got a brain storm to call a a friend whom I grew up with and played on teams with for a number of years. He agreed to help me and I outfitted him necessary equipment. As the first game commenced, we had teams with full uniforms and managers coming to play. I figured since my friend, Dave, was new at this part of the game, I had better take plate duties (for any rulings) and have him call bases. Things went smoothly for the first couple of innings, and then we had a bang-bang play at first base and Dave called the the runner out with a flourish of style. Great call. But then, the manager come storming out of the dugout. Calling time out he went over to Dave for the argument. I figured I better hustle down there to intercede if necessary. The manager started a tirade of How can you call that runner out - he was safe all the way. Dave calmly looked the manager up and down and said, How can you come out here to question a call, when you dont even know how to dress for a game - your leggings are on backwards! The manager had his leggings on high side front instead of back in the style then. He looked down, looked at players on the field, his own player base coach, turned and walked away amid mixed snickering. Word spread and Dave and I had a comfortable afternoon of calling games.
