Today I was put in charge of 40% of my grandkids. I had Makinley (10) and Abbey (4). I decided to make it a teaching day. Time to teach the kids some of lifes lessons. We started by chasing fire trucks. We thought we might get to see a neat fire but instead it was just a minor fender-bender. From there it was a trip to Wal-Mart where we turned on all the talking animals and then did the same with the talking cards. Makinley and I then taught Abbey how to take the wax fruit and mix it with the real fruit. At first she didnt want to do it because she said it wouldnt be nice, but she got to like it when we started telling her about folks trying to eat a plastic banana. From there it was a trip to Village Creek State Park for a walk in the woods. Part of the trail was formerly part of the Trail of Tears route taken by the Cherokee and Choctaw nations. I had a nice talk with the kids about their Cherokee and Choctaw forbears and Abbey asked me if Grandpa Naile (Cherokee) had walked there. I told her it was probably his grandpa. We walked to the amphitheater where the kids were going to put on a show for me but some other folks were there taking family pictures. So much for that. After a stop for some M+Ms we headed home. It was a really good day to be a granddaddy.
