Today I was talking to a woman in the radiation waiting room of Cleve Clinic. She explained how scared she was because her husband had terminal brain cancer and had an operation, and now was doing chemo and radiation to possibly buy him a year. Thats bad enough BUT… She said everyday she gets denied notices from her insurance company Humania Advantage (also Medicare). She said that since the hospital knew the insurance co wasnt going to pay for her husbands care he was treated badly. She also said his medication prescription plan expresscript would not pay for his chemo pills or other medication. She was very distraught. Caring for her husband and having to travel from Akron everyday AND facing out of the world bills is horrible. Now another scenario: Gary and I have Aetna Advantage (Medicare). Gary is NOT terminal. They have paid for MOST of Garys Hospital care, treatments and pretty much all his medications. The hospital treated Gary wonderfully. They made a bad situation as pleasant as possible. The insurance co. paid for the home nurse and his home medical equipment and supplies. We had to have everything pre approved but that always went through right away without a hitch. All I have had to worry about is Gary, and believe me going through things like this takes about all the energy a healthy person can muster. Its very draining and emotional. I cant even think about how I would be if I was worrying about money and how I would pay for treatments to keep him alive. These are stories of just 2 cancer patients and their families in the same area, same hospital but different diagnoses and different insurance co. Any comments or thoughts?
