Today, I was walking along a group of parrots cages that are out in the forest, away from the buildings, as I often do in the afternoon. The parrots suddenly went bananas and started giving high pitched alarm calls. I was mystified because it was clear they were very upset and yet as I looked around and I could find no reason for the ruckus. Then I heard the unmistakable rumbling that the forest makes when a seismic wave its approaching. Seconds after I heard the sound I felt the jolt of the ground movement, it was sharp, the shaking lasted just a few seconds. All eighteen cages around me started swinging from side to side, something I had never seen before. Mercifully the event was brief. I was a 5.76 in the sea, about fifty miles away from the coast of the Dominican Republic.
