Today I watched a 99 yr old female patient take almost 4 minutes to drink only 4 ounces of Ensure through a straw. (Thats the size of a small juice cup, if youre wondering.) Did you ever take the time to notice how slow liquid moves through a straw when sucked by a person that is 99 years old? I tried to pull the straw out of her mouth several times because I thought she was done but she wasnt. You and I take so much for granted. The time that it took for her to simply quench her thirst is just about the same time it takes for the average Joe and Joanne to eat a burger and pop a few fries in our mouth, followed by a swallow or two of our favorite beverage. Be glad, facebook nation, for simply the joy of not having to depend on a chaplain to hold your cup of Ensure for 4 minutes while a couple of drips flow down your cheek.
