Today I went back to Ta Phrom, and while it was quite crowded, I re-found my quiet spot and I made the same wish again for his younger brother. When I escape the crowds, I can imagine 500 years have evaporated, and that it is just me and the birds wondering how the temple walls are still standing despite the giant fig trees growing on them. It was then and is now a beautiful ruin. Now it is evening, and I float in the cool waters of the pool at Heritage Suites, a fabulous Relais & Chateaux luxury boutique hotel, near the river in Siem Reap. When I left for the temples this morning I heard the joyful calls of the children from the nearby school...now all is quiet, save the flutter of bats as they swoop through the purple sky, and the crinkle of my eyes as I smile to myself at the wonderfulness of this day. All seems right in the world, and I hope to come back with my nephews so they can experience it too. *Johanna Read is a Canadian travel writer and photographer who swapped her life as a Government of Canada executive for a nomadic lifestyle, and now travels the world sharing the good things she finds.
