Today I went in search of Gight Castle - Byrons ancestral home and the place that drove Mad Jack Byron mad. Its an atmospheric ruin in the middle of a remote and ancient wood. The castle has a bloody history of ghostly pipers, suicides and people cut to pieces by the Devil. I didnt see (or hear) any ghosts but I did startle a young roe deer buck, who in turn startled me by leaping clear of the scrub and racing elegantly back to the woods. I was only a tiny bit tresspassy, but to me a broken fence is as good as an embossed invitation.
