Today I went to Ferguson to be with Iyanla Vanzant. There were about 50 -100 people, including press and filmmakers. We all walked out to the memorial in the street where Mike Brown died. Iyanla said a long prayer and doused the spot with water during her prayer. It felt like a funeral. It was emotional and intense. I was shocked by where it happened. The neighborhood is perfectly normal and feels like a big family. Just apartment buildings and beautiful lawns and landscaping. I would live there. The cops say he was fleeing but there was no where to go. He was in his front yard essentially. He could see his front door. The people are still in shock but it seems they are ready to organize and get involved to make this stop. They know its going to take more than protesting for it to change. theyre going to have to participate., vote, get into politics, forgive, demand, respect, give etc...and not stop. Did you all see that ANOTHER black male, 23, was killed here IN STL yesterday?! And in NC today? Did you see the 5000 protesters for Michael Brown in Atlanta yesterday? In FRONT of CNN?! And CNN didnt cover it. Saturday Im speaking at The Legacy walk for MLK Jr. here in STL. Unrelated to the Ferguson story yet now including Michael Brown. My goal will be to inspire forgiveness, integrity and responsibility in the people for our personal roles in letting this become our world and our way. And uplift their belief and commitment to being the change they wish to have in our world. Loving and respecting themselves by getting involved and creating what they want. No more victim. Today its the African Americans treatment by the police. Tomorrow it will be the rest of us. Its a good reason to care now. It may not appear to involve you though its only blatant in THIS community now. If we dont take it personally and seriously its going to be everyone soon. This isnt a racial based situation. Its about our economic hierarchy. So Im having an amazing time here. I feel connected, inspired and powerful. (Which I believe is our authentic human state) Im grateful to be surrounded by many loving and courageous game changing leaders. (Which must include YOU if youve read this far!) Thank you for caring.
