Today I went to an Indian Muslim shop which was selling Roti-Prata. I ordered a Mutton Murtabak and finding no free table, decided to share a table with this Malay guy who is about 20 kgs more than me. He nodded his head in approval and I said thanks and sat opposite him. While both of us played with our i-phones, the waiter brought him a chicken fried rice and a teh tarek, and somewhat not-so-politely told him 6 dollar 50! The Malay guy looked offended, but fished out a 10 dollar note and handed it to the waiter grimly. The moment he left, this guy leaned towards me and said - I hate it when they ask for money even before I can start eating I showed my sympathy and nodded in agreement - Ya, its not fair, they should let us eat first The waiter returned his change and served a plate of prata to the next table where there was a Chinese couple seated. While we were both watching him, he did not ask for any money from them and that made this guy furious. You see, this is racist! He didnt ask the Chinese guy to pay first. They treat us differently. We Indians and Malays are not trustworthy. They think we will run away without paying Not wanting to fuel this racial angle, I tried to calm him down - I am sure it is not like that. The guy is an Indian. Maybe he forgot to ask from them He was still grumpy but started to eat his fried rice. And then the waiter returned, this time with my Murtabak. He served and started to walk away, much to the dismay of this Malay guy. Not wanting to make him embarrassed, I called the waiter and asked him while taking out a 10 dollar from my shirt pocket - How much is it? The waiter turned back and said - 7 Dollars, but u can pay after u finish eating and walked away back to the counter. I dare not look anymore at the Malay guy, I could only hear his heavy breathing!!!
