Today I went to get my oil changed at a corporate retail outlet in Charleston. You know the kind that is in every town in America. I bet you didn’t know that miracles of love can happen there. I’ve been working at my computer all week trying to organize a few big photo shoots that will occur here in the coming weeks and have missed the amount of human contact I like to have. I’ll admit that right off the bat. So when I arrived, I smiled and complimented the young African American lady who asked me what services I needed for my car. I told her she was very poised and lovely and thanked her for her beautiful smile. The 2 other employees came out from the garage to listen and we all laughed and enjoyed our contact with each other. This, as I smilingly but sternly told them to please after draining and filling my car with oil to properly screw the cap on underneath my car as I’d had that not happen once to potentially tragic consequences. Then we talked about cars and anything else we could think of. We continued to enjoy each other’s company – this mid 20ish African American woman, this young mid 20’s Latino man, and the young 20ish guy who was coy and smiling alot. We talked of the kind of cars we dreamed of having vs. the ones we could really have a shot at buying. We talked about life. I knew I was happy but apparently some kind of ‘moment’ happened that I was oblivious to until they handed me the keys to my car and said, ‘your car is ready’. I said, “Did I pay yet? “ and the young lady hugged me and said, “No there’s no charge, we don’t meet people who talk to us and with us and not down to us or who are not in such a hurry or stressed out that there is no real contact, so please none of us want to charge you. Please have a beautiful day.” And tears came to my eyes and I hugged that young lady and shook those young men’s hands and jokingly asked her to hug them for me because well maybe they wouldn’t like me to hug them and she said, “Oh I don’t think they would mind that.” And as I left I wiped a little tear away and was grateful.
