Today I went to lunch with my mom, sister, grandma and kids. Landon is typically exceptionally well behaved, but today he was hungry and had an attitude. Because, you know, hes human. After a few kind warnings I said, Okay, get up. We walked outside the restaurant and I got my pregnant self down to his level, looked him in the eyes, gave him a stern what-for, waited for him to verbally agree to the attitude change, told him I loved him and back inside we went. He got it together, but I felt deflated. Then Ellie had a meltdown about how hot her mac and cheese was and it just wasnt going well. I wanted to yell, MOMS ARE PEOPLE, TOO! It was a moment. Par for the FREAKING course. You see, Ive had one of those weeks. The kind where youre pretty sure youre failing as a mother (and person) in general. But really, not a good few days. At all. After lunch we walked back to the car and a lady stopped me. She said, I was outside when you took your son out... I thought, here it comes. I dont need your criticism, lady. Im DOING THE BEST I PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY CAN. She continued, Youre a really good mom. Im a nanny and Ive seen so many push over moms. It was so good to see you care enough. Youre doing great. I burst into tears. (Im crying now thinking about it...) Thank you, stranger. Your comment was small but you changed my day and years from now I will still remember your words. You didnt know how much I needed to hear that. It meant more than youll ever know.
