Today I went to the immigration services office to renew my green card. They asked me to check a race box. “Other”, which I usually select, wasn’t a choice so I checked “unknown”, since I’m not Black, White, Asian, Hispanic or Native American. The chick processing my application had a real problem with my choice: “but where are you from?” “My parents are Moroccan”… *silence* “I’m Arab/brown”. She wasn’t convinced and she replied: “I think you should check “white” cause you look mixed and you have at least 32% white, I can tell by your eyes theyre beautiful” *GASP… DID SHE JUST SAY THAT…? One of those: did I really hear what I just heard moments* She calls her manager because she needs to have confirmation that I could indeed check “unknown” (WHICH WAS A CHOICE). After a 10 minute debate with the manager who explained that my application might be delayed if I check “unknown”, and me explaining to her that I was not described by any of their boxes, they finally process my application with unknown. AND she entered my weight wrong, but I let that slide. Might wanna consider additional boxes, IMMIGRATION peeps. Seriously? #INeedABox #Other
