Today Id like to introduce you to a great painter of seascapes - Montague Dawson (1890-1973). I have always admired his work, but its not easy to see any of his paintings because most of his them are in private collections around the world. He was a superb artist and a superb expert on everything to do with ships, especially old sailing ships of all kinds. You can see this expertise in the way he painted the ships, with great confidence and clarity. As a former navy man he understood the intricate structures of old ships and he had a detailed knowledge of how they worked. He was also a brilliant painter of the sea in all its moods, from tranquil and calm to wild and dramatic. There are very few painters who can paint the sea as well as he could, and trust me - it is very difficult to do this well. The way he painted the weight and movement of water is truly wonderful. I hope you enjoy this random selection of his paintings. I find them very thrilling and inspiring.
