Today Im checking out prices of commodes, specifically vintage styles made by Toto. Several months ago when we mentioned macarating toilets to Messmer Mechanical, Mark recommended Totos traditional models instead. Although Id seen the name before (online & in Lana & Davids bathrooms), I assumed their products might be less expensive options than Kohler & American Standard, but wasnt quite sure about how well they work. When it comes to toilets, Ill opt for function over form any day. From that day on, I began a study of plumbing in various settings--medical facilities, shopping centers, & other public restrooms that get heavy use/abuse. Every time a commode flushed amazingly fast & with surprisingly little water, the brand was always Toto. Even better, there are several styles appropriate for period bathrooms. Some of the names do sound a bit ostentatious (really---the Gwenivere?), but who can argue with a 1.28 GPF rate---especially when older toilets can use 2 to 5 times that much water with EVERY flush! Multiply the difference per flush per day times 7, & these babies will practically pay for themselves over a few years. (OK, I wasnt familiar with the abbreviation for gallons per flush until today, but at least I can sound knowledgeable now!) Since Messmers trust Toto enough for their own homes & report they experience the fewest maintenance issues, thats good enough for me---& for Mr. Fix-it, too, cause hell have better things to do than keep 7 toilets flowing smoothly. ;-) totousa/products/toilets
