Today Im going to ride my motorcycle to the very edge of the vast Pacific tectonic plate and across onto the North American plate. The place where these great sheets of earth collide has formed an enormous mountain range which I will ride up and over. When I arrive on the far side Ill be riding through a desert which has literally been pushed thousands of feet up from the energy of collision. This is the High Desert of California which is distinct from the Low Desert I left on the other side of the plate boundary. Whenever I cross from one sheet of earth onto another Im cognizant of scale, imperceptible motion and the drop-to-knees humility and awe of deep time.
