Today In Texas History - December 5 1786 - Presidio commander Rafael Martinez Pacheco was appointed as the governor ad interim of Texas. He claimed to have recruited families to settle in San Saba. 1835 - The Texas revolutionary army began its assault on the Mexan garrison at San Antonio de Béxar. The battle ended with the Mexican army surrender on December 9. After the battle most of the volunteers went home leaving San Antonio and all of Texas under their control. 1837 - In Houston, the twenty-six prominent Texans founded the Philosophical Society of Texas. 1870 - Bill Picket was born in Jenks-Branch, Travis County. In 1972, he became the first black honoree to be inducted into the National Rodeo Hall of Fame. 2000 - In Waco, TX, a site where dozens of prehistoric mammoths died in a landslide and flooding about 68,000 years ago opened to the public. 2010 - In Fort Worth, TX, the west stands of Amon G. Stadium were imploded during a $105 million renovation project. thewessternvault
