~ Today In Texas History ~ Nov. 24th 1835 - The Texas Rangers organization was officially established by the Texas provisional government. In 1823, Stephen F. Austin had hired 10 rangers to help protect his colonists against Indian raids. It was not until 1835 that the group was formally organized. 1868 - Near Linden, Texas, pianist and composer Scott Joplin was born. He was known as the King of Ragtime. 1924 - Boles Childrens Home, originally known as Boles Orphans Home, received its first ten orphans. 1943 - Doris Dorie Miller, a Texan and the first African-American hero of World War II, died when the USS Liscome Bay was torpedoed near Butaritari Island. The USS Miller, a Knox-class frigate, was later named after him. 1963 - Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald live on national television. 1984 - President Reagan spoke with Rosemary Lourcey, the editor of the Longhorn Scene Magazine.
