Today In Weather History, Oct. 19th: HURRICANE WILMA: On Oct. 19, in 2005, Hurricane Wilma attained the lowest central pressure of any Western Hemisphere hurricane on record, bottoming out at 26.05 inches. ------------------ HURRICANE WILMA BECAME THE MOST INTENSE HURRICANE TO DEVELOP IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN WHEN HER CENTRAL PRESSURE DROPPED TO 882 MILLIBARS OR 26.05 INCHES, AS SHE MOVED NORTHWEST OVER THE CARIBBEAN. HER MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WIND SPEEDS REACHED 185 MPH, MAKING HER THE 4TH ATLANTIC BASIN HURRICANE OF THE 2005 SEASON TO ACHIEVE CATEGORY 5 STATUS AND THE 13TH HURRICANE OVERALL BOTH SEASONAL RECORDS. DURING HER 12 DAY LIFESPAN FROM OCTOBER 15TH TO THE 26TH. SHE KILLED 23 AND CAUSED A TOTAL OF $29 BILLION DAMAGE. (NWS data)
