Today, MOM debunked the myth that men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. As the planets harmonize on this historic day, India not only celebrates the festivals of Navratri in praise of Goddess Durga, as well as Rosh Hashanah, but also the spirit of scientific discovery which has always been an intrinsic part of our history, with MOM – India’s Mission on Mars. Affectionately nicknamed, MOM - and rightly so – since several women scientists at ISRO were instrumental in making this monumental event take place! There’s a crucial band of women, working across the entire range of India’s space programme, that comprise about 20% of ISRO’s total workforce of 14,246 employees – who made India’s Mission on Mars a success and has given the country new wings and a sense of hope. Mangalyaan, as it is officially known, literally means “The Mars Vehicle” in Hindi. And with all the blessings of a good garuda (spiritual vehicle of the Hindu God), Mangalyaan is the world’s first space mission to not only reach Mars, but launch into orbit on her maiden voyage! “Mommy Mangalyan” was also the lowest costing mission on Mars at just $74m, making her not only the first successful foray, but also the most economical. As she launches into orbit, she launches India back onto the map and on the quest of scientific discovery.
