Today (March 18) In Black History 1. 2002 -George Monroe was on of 2 Black men who carried mail on the famous Pony express. Monroe had the honor of driving Presidents Grant and Hayes along the dangerous S-curves of the Wanona trail into Yosemite Valley. Badger Pass in Yosemite National Park was named in his honor. 2.1909 - President Roosevelt appointed a committee, including Emmet J. Scott, to investigate disturbances in Liberia. 3. 1895 - Two hundred Blacks left Savannah, Ga., for Liberia. 4. 1879 - Forty-sixth Congress (1879-1881) convened. One U.S. Senator: Blanche K. Bruce, Mississippi. 5. 1877 - President Hayes appointed Frederick Douglass marshal of District of Columbia. 6. 1972-The USS Jesse L.
