Today, November 20th, marks the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) to mourn, honor, and celebrate our trans and gender non-conforming community members who we have lost in the last year due to anti-transgender violence of any kind – locally, nationally, and globally. CLAGS recognizes TDOR and encourage our members and allies to honor, celebrate, and uplift the voices of the many transgender friends, family, and community members who are thriving and surviving today. TDOR was started by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. For more information on TDOR please visit GLAAD or the TDOR website. We also wish to take a moment to honor and mourn the passing of Leslie Feinberg, author of Stone Butch Blues, and “a pioneer in trans and lesbian issues, workers rights, and intersectionality long before anyone could define the phrase.” We pass our condolences to Leslie’s partner, Minnie Bruce Pratt, and to all of us who have known Leslie, or been affected by Leslie’s writing and activism. Rest in power. Sincerely, Kevin Nadal, PhD Executive Director CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies
