Today On ALL IN THE MIND - HIS BELOVED SON (Youll need your browser to read this to the end) The one thing that caught visitors attention when they drive past Jericho, past ipaalemu ko lada Anebi is a very magnificent edifice which leaves them gasping for breath as it suddenly spread out after a very sharp bend. Visitors are stunned by this mansion but not so many still are when they learnt the owner of this mansion is Chief Ameh of Okoto. Chief Ameh is household in the country. After working with Chevron - an American oil company - for 35 years, Chief retired at an executive echelon and started managing his own businesses. Chief owns a transport line in Okoto which shuttle over 20 states, a very vast resort centre also in Okoto which extends the express to OkpUgo in which rich folks, holiday makers cruise and fish in fancy boats and numerous other investmenst within and outside Okoto. Chief is 60years now, his extremely beautiful wife who many believed was African by mistake, died 10years ago but not before giving him four of her replica; three daughters(even more beautiful) and a very handsome son - Inalegwu. Inalegwu is chiefs first child and only son. He oversees Chiefs transport company and the resort centre. Inalegwu is everyones favourite within the family and his wife is so loved by Chief youll think she is his own daughter. They all live together as one big family; Inalegwu and his wife lives in a duplex within Chiefs villa. The only problem is Inalegwu has been married to his wife Aladi, for the past 5years without a child. But everyone, especially Chief told her not to worry, Gods time is the best. Chief appeared to be a lonely man especially when his youngest and only single child is away at school overseas. It seems even death cannot do part to Chief and his late wife because he is still faithful to her even in death though it has being making the round recently that Chief sleeps with one of his secretaries so very few eyebrows rise when Chief announced his intentions to marry Enenu - a very beautiful, intelligent, ebullient and spirited girl - who most people thought was too young for chief but others thought with all the money why not. All Chiefs children were very happy with the idea. Enenu is 29; 2years older than Aladi, a year older than chiefs eldest daughter and two younger than Inalegwu. Enenu rose rapidly in rank within Chiefs company untill Chief spotted her and make her his personal assistance. And now his wife. Chief had insisted Inalegwu be present at every process and negotiations of the marriage. Today, Enenu gave birth to a very handsome baby boy few hours ago and a very big party is underway. Inalegwu was at Makurdi when he got the call from his father telling him to meet them at Emanches hospital Okoto where Enenu is about to put to bed. But Inalegwu doesnt want to go the hospital or to see any child so he drove straight home and waited for them to come once theyve been discharged from the hospital. Presently, chiefs large compound is filled and overflowing with a great throng; relatives, friends, sychophants, event gourmands, party commandos from Okwudu, Ehatokpe, Ogobia were all present in scores as this is the day theyve all been waiting for. As if Chief expect them all there were assorted foods and drinks to make the craziest glutton surrender. By some extraordinary coincidence, all chiefs children were home even the one studying overseas arrived just in time to be present at the hospital during the parturition. But Chief could not find his favourite and only son. At last Chief found him sitting with a tall glass of Moet in the brilliantly lighted garden little forest garden at the back of the compound lost in thought. Chief called his name and Inalegwu jumped spilling some of his drink in the process. why are you here all by yourself, is there any problem? You look lost. Chief said. Im o.k dad, it just that Im a bit tired. O.k son, chief said then turned to leave then stopped and said by the way, have you thought of a name for your son? The glass of baileys fell from Amehs hands and shattered. His throat went dry as his hands begin to tremble. His lips wobble as the events that started barely 2months after his father married Sophia flashed sharply through his mind. He was sitting in this very spot one sunday evening when Sophia walk up unabashedly complained that her husband - his father - is practically impotent. I cant continue like this. Look at me, Im still very young and Im not going to waste my whole life on him. He barely touch me befor fallen asleep. Ill start sleeping around unless you do something. What! Theres nothing i can do about it. And pls, dont dont ever tell me such crap again. I want you to sleep with me. What! Are you mad? Ameh said in disbelieve. I would do it outside and bring disgrace and embarrassment to your family unless you agree to it. Afterall, you are his son and you should take charge of your fathers entire estate when he becomes too weak to manage them. Ameh cursed and warned her never to try this rubbish with him again. How can I sleep with my fathers wife and cheat on my wife? You disgust me was Amehs final word then he left her. Enenu only smiled. Give it some time she told herself. She was pleased with Inalegwus reaction. All she has to do is wear somethings, say somethings, do somethings, show somethings and stay at someplaces at sometimes. To do anything good or evil only takes you to have enough courage to do it the first time, subsequent ones become easy with progress. But it takes greater courage and willpower to stop an addiction than it takes to start it . So 4months later when Enenu told Ameh she was pregnant, she made it very clear to him that the pregnancy is his and not his fathers but nobody has to know . That is what has kept Inalegwu restless for the past nine months. That is what has driven Inalegwu away from the happy crowd to this solitary spot. How did dad know? Dad knew all along, why didnt he say or do something untill now? I am a dead man! Inalegwu thought as cold shivers ran down his spine and shook him right to the ground. But chief has not finished talking I mean he is practically your son. I am sixty now, in a decade time or less if Im lucky to still be alive, ill be too weak to raise this child, then you will be the one to raise him as one of your own. O-h that, Ameh said, exhaling loudly I-I-I understand. Ill think of-of a name. then starts to leave. I need to rest. See you in the mor-morning dad. Chief smiled knowing what he has done I must be crazy, mega crazy. All I wanted was a grandchild, a son to carry on my name. Dont worry son, Enenu is all yours from day one. chief muttered to himself. Let him digest this one yet, Ill tell him all about it soon. chief said as he hurried to his large reception where his friends are still celebrating. Ladies and Gentlemen, is this the right kind of fathers love? Is Inalegwu guilty in anyway as it is? Think it, do it, achieve it and be the ultimate, ITS ALL IN THE MIND. J. McEgwa.
