Today,Puerto Viejo hosted a parade of cowboys and horses....called the Rasta Tope. Once a year, extranjeros( people who have moved here from other countries)...like us, get this opportunity to see that the Caribbean does have a strong cowboy culture, like everywhere else in Costa Rica. It is not visible or evident everyday here...but it was so apparent today. The cowboy that put India up on his horse and rode her around town is just one example. I have known this guy for over 5 years....bumping into him back in the frontier bars, on those very rare ( yeah, right) occasions that I have found myself back there as the only gringo in a mosh pit of back country, agricultural Latino Ticos. He has always befriended me, for no particular reason that I could discern...but his smiling face was always welcome to me, especially in the weird situations that seem to follow me wherever I go. . And today...I realised he is a real caballero. He graciously gave India rides on his horse up and down the streets of Puerto Viejo. Ladies,...there are handsome gentlemen alive and well here in Costa Rica. What a great day in paradise!
