Today, Rwanda marked the 19th anniversary of Rwanda’s Liberation. Celebrations and activities were carried out at the village level under the theme "Celebrating Africa’s Renaissance, Working towards Self-reliance". At the national level, President Paul Kagame joined the community of eleven villages from Kinyinya sector, Kigali, where festivities that were held at the newly renovated Kami Military Barracks. This year’s celebrations combined the festivities of the Liberation Day, 51 years of Independence and the 50th anniversary of the African Union. President Kagame began his remarks by sharing his understanding of liberation: “Liberation is about fighting for dignity. It’s the struggle to achieve development, security, stability, knowledge and prosperity. This has never been easy and neither should we assume that it will ever be,” he said. Take ownership of the development process – President Kagame President Kagame reminded Rwandans that liberation made all of us responsible for doing our part so that Rwanda advanced. “Rwandans old and young, men and women must take ownership of our future...achieving a better a future is the responsibility of each of us. Rwandans cannot settle for being observers of their own life. Do not let anyone make you believe that development is up to anyone but yourself. We must play our part to take part, putting our hands to work,” said President Kagame. He encouraged them to draw strength from Rwanda’s accomplishments. “We have a long way to go but the progress we have made so far shows that we can accomplish much more. Rwanda’s history and challenges cannot be addressed like business as usual. It requires a new approaches, innovation”. In conclusion, President Kagame thanked all Rwandans for being an integral part of the liberation struggle through their continuous hard work, commitment and determination. Before his remarks, President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame toured Kami Barracks renovated by proceeds from RDF soldiers on peacekeeping mission. In addition, around the barracks, 150 homes are being built for genocide survivors as well those relocated from high risk zones.
