Today, Senator Harkin held his last Senate hearing on disability - TopicsExpress

Today, Senator Harkin held his last Senate hearing on disability rights to mark the progress made since the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in 1990 and to highlight the work still to be accomplished to provide more Americans with disabilities opportunities to rise out of poverty and reap the benefits of middle class. At the hearing, Senator Harkin released the findings of a report which showed that Americans with disabilities are still twice as likely to live in poverty as the general population and still face unemployment rates over twice that of other Americans. During the hearing, Senator Harkin heard from young people with disabilities who know firsthand how hard it can be to find work. To help ensure people with disabilities have the same opportunities as others to succeed, Senator Harkin introduced three bills as part of an “Access for All” agenda. Senator Harkin is proud to work with so many great champions for people with disabilities and looks forward to continuing that work in the months and years ahead.
