Today, September 1st, is the National Disaster Prevention Day in Japan. The emergency drill in case of 7.3 earthquake was held in Tokyo, attended by Japanese Prime Minister Abe and his cabinet members. The drill started off with an “emergency meeting” at the Prime Minister’s official residence on Monday morning. Tokyo governor Yoichi Masuzoe also attended this conference via teleconference. Later on, the emergency drill took place in Kanagawa Prefecture, with nearly 10,000 people. This drill, which Abe attended as well, was held among 5 government-designated cities including Tokyo. Participants practiced emergency relief activities using AEDs and slings. In case a magnitude-7-class earthquake will strike Tokyo area, the government predicts 23000 fatalities will be caused in the worst case scenario. Various emergency drills will be held throughout Japan during the disaster prevention week, which will run until the 5th.
